District Six Enhance Operator Workstations at the SunGuide Transportation Management Center

The District Six Transportation System Management & Operations (TSM&O) Program Office has been expanding its operations and is implementing new traffic management strategies to meet the region’s growing demands. As part of these efforts, the District has been upgrading the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) with new systems and design features to accommodate current and future needs.

The SunGuide TMC is the regional transportation hub for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. It is a 32,000 square foot facility that houses traffic and communications staff for FDOT District Six, Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX), Florida Highway Patrol Troop ‘E’, and other agencies. FDOT has upgraded the facility throughout the years to accommodate program growth. In 2015, the District retrofitted the center’s control room to optimize space and improve operations. It added 10 more workstations and six work desks to accommodate the growing team. The workstations were redesigned from a linear model to modular pods to streamline communication between staff and promote a collaborative work environment. This summer, the workstations were enhanced with a standing desk feature that gives operators the option to sit or stand during their shift. Standing desks reportedly provide a variety of benefits to users, including improved posture and alertness. This enhancement has yielded positive results and feedback from the staff.

District Six is planning additional building and control room upgrades to meet demand. It will be replacing the current video wall with one that uses the latest in display technology and operations. The District understands the importance of remaining adaptive to the growing transportation needs of the community and implements the changes necessary to meet these demands.
