District Six Hosts Student Tour

Approximately 60 students from Carrie Meek Elementary School toured the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District Six SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) earlier this month.

The visit was part of the school’s partnership with the National Labor Committee’s Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) Program which introduces students to career awareness through professionally designed lesson plans taught by business volunteers in the classroom and visits to work sites.

District Six was happy to participate in the program and host the tour. The tour was designed to feature a total of three stations that allowed the students to learn about different aspects of FDOT’s transportation program including community traffic safety, Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O), including incident management.

Students learned about the importance of these services and asked the presenters several career-oriented questions during their visit. The tour proved to be an enriching experience for both the students and teachers. The TMC is planning additional community activities for the summer.
