The association, known as BROSAMVERKAN, consists of a group of companies, institutions, state, and municipal organizations that build and manage bridge structures in Sweden. The group traveled to Florida to visit several key projects, including the I-395/SR 836/I-95 Design-Build Project that features a signature bridge near downtown Miami. The project is expected to be completed in late 2027. The bridge is slated to be a global landmark for our city for its unique look and design. FDOT representatives gave them an on-site tour of the project and explained construction plans, capacity enhancements, cultural impacts, and lessons learned. The site tour was followed by a visit to the District’s SunGuide Transportation Management Center where they learned how the agency provides traffic operations for the state roadways, including I-395.

Tour attendees met at the District’s headquarters where Secretary Miller and executive staff welcomed them and highlighted the latest initiatives happening in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. They were then taken to the I-395 Signature Bridge project site near downtown Miami. Project managers walked them through the bridge to show them the structures, beams, and columns that are being installed. They were briefed on the project’s milestones and estimated plans for completion. This was followed by a visit to PortMiami. They drove through the 4,200 feet tunnel that travels beneath Biscayne Bay and connects the MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island with PortMiami on Dodge Island. They were shown the cargo and cruise terminals which serve as the global gateway between the world markets and the United States. The tour finished with a visit to the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC). TMC staff gave them a program overview and detailed the services provided as well as the latest projects that are being launched in the region. They walked through the TMC’s control room where they got to see the new video wall and operator workstations up close.

The “Summer Tour” event is hosted by FDOT to showcase the agency’s major projects to state legislators and their respective staff. They take place across all seven districts and serve to promote agency relations between the agency and the representatives.

The Director of the Nevada Department of Transportation (DOT) visited the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) in May.  The Director wanted to learn about the regional transportation network in southeast Florida. She was interested in seeing how the District was managing the increases in driver demand and knowing more about the systems that were implemented to maintain the safety and mobility goals in the region. FDOT District Secretary and TSM&O staff hosted a productive meeting for the agency and answered all pertinent questions.

The District also hosted tours for a few local educational institutions, including Florida International University’s (FIU) school of engineering whose students were interested in learning about TSM&O as a potential career option. Teachers from the Miami-Dade County Public School system also visited the TMC in June. They represented the school system’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program. They also wanted to learn more about TSM&O so they could communicate their findings back to their respective schools and potentially enhance their curriculums. District staff explained the many career options they can follow to work in the field of TSM&O, including civil engineering, information technology, computer science, maintenance, and many others. The goal was to open the pathways of communication between local education professionals and FDOT to harbor the next wave of talent for the transportation industry.

Lastly, the TSM&O Office hosted two tours for new employees and interns from regional emergency management programs. For this group, TSM&O staff provided a program overview and described how traffic management and incident management services work to keep our communities safe. They detailed the importance of maintaining open lines communication between FDOT, first responders, and partner agencies, especially during emergency situations.

The FDOT District Six TSM&O Office has many more tours and presentations scheduled for the rest of the year. These events are vital to educating and engaging the public about the program and the many benefits it provides southeast Florida.

The national conference brings industry professionals to showcase and discuss the latest innovations in transportation and technology. The theme this year was “Accelerating Digital Transformation” and highlighted the initiatives that are using advanced technology concepts to optimize roadways operations and driver safety.

The three-day meeting featured numerous conference sessions, transportation showcases and tours, as well as networking opportunities for attendees to meet and learn from each other. The conference sessions covered the current topics impacting the industry today, including Digital Infrastructure, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X)/Connected Transportation, Automated Vehicles, Emerging Technology, Multi-Modal Equitable Mobility, and Climate Resilience and Sustainability.

The ITS America Conference is one of the most important events of the year because it offers a robust program of sessions and events that can benefit transportation professionals of all sectors, including state agencies, technology companies, auto manufacturers and suppliers as well as research and academia. It serves as a cross-sector event that allows attendees to gain valuable insights and opportunities.

The District Six TSM&O Office participates in these events as part of its ongoing mission to improve traffic operations and safety. It regularly attends state, regional, and national events to bring forth the latest transportation solutions to southeast Florida. Mr. Sergio Bravo, P.E., who serves as the TSM&O Engineer for the Arterials Division, spoke to the students about the role engineers play in the community. He outlined his educational trajectory through the engineering track and the steps he took to get to his current position within FDOT. Mr. Bravo also gave a general presentation that explained the TSM&O Program and the services it provides on a daily basis. He showed a short video that detailed the importance of integrating technology to keep up with traffic demand in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The tour unveiled the CoMB’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) that recently opened in the District Six SunGuide TMC building. The esteemed guests included the city’s mayor, commissioners, law enforcement personnel, and executive management staff. FDOT welcomed the group and provided an overview of the TSM&O program as well as the real-time traffic services provided from the SunGuide TMC including traffic management, incident management, and traveler information. FDOT answered questions about the current projects impacting the city like the construction of the 395 Signature Bridge, 95 Express, and others. The agency also highlighted the successful partnership with CoMB and the benefits that will be yielded to the community as a result of their joint efforts. Attendees then toured the CoMB’s TMC room located on the second floor of the building. The room is outfitted with a video wall and four workstations where dedicated staff monitors traffic and parking operations. City representatives explained the intelligent transportation systems infrastructure and devices that have been installed in the city’s jurisdiction that will promote the safety and mobility of their roadways. The tour and information presented was well received by the city’s officials. They were proud of the efforts and advancements being made toward improving the quality of life for the region.

FDOT’s Central Office commenced the meeting with opening remarks and
opened the agenda for group discussion. District representatives talked about
key topics such as express lanes, lessons on grant applications, software costs,
updates to the 511 Traveler Information System, and others. These topics were
opened for discussion to promote communication and collaboration between all
districts. FDOT’s objective is to optimize TSM&O operations across all districts to
benefit Florida drivers.

Central Office hosts these face-to-face meetings on an annual basis. A district is
selected to serve as the host site to expose the attendees to the traffic conditions
of each region. Representatives were given the opportunity to tour the District Six
SunGuide Transportation Management Center and Florida International
University’s Wrong Way Driving Simulation Lab.

The STEM program is funded by Miami-Dade County Public Schools to educate
students in these disciplines through course-specific curriculums enhanced by
trainings, projects, and activities. During this visit, students shadowed FDOT
staff and participated in interactive presentations from the Design, Maintenance,
Construction, and Transportation Systems Management and Operations
(TSM&O) departments.

FDOT staff gave the students a unique glimpse of how each department works
within the agency to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently. As part of the visit,
students toured the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) and
learned how engineering applies to control room operations, information
technology, and incident management. They got a behind the scenes look at how
technology is used to manage traffic, clear incidents, and disseminate traveler
information to the public in real-time.

The District Six Office often works with partner agencies interested in managing traffic from a multimodal and multi-agency level. In 2022, the City began their Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) and Smart Parking System project. This includes a citywide deployment of ITS field equipment and establishing a TMC. The City worked with FDOT on an agreement that allows the City of Miami Beach TMC to be located within the SunGuide TMC building. The City plans to begin operating from the TMC in 2024. The tour helped give City of Miami Beach officials a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what their future in-house traffic operations will look like. It provided an overview of TMC operations and the technology used to manage traffic daily.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s dispatch center and the TMC for the Greater Miami Expressway Agency are also co-located in the SunGuide TMC building. These types of partnerships help coordinate resources and communication between partner agencies and provide a safe and reliable transportation system for all roadway users in the South Florida region.

The three-hour event was kicked off by District Secretary, Ms. Stacy Miller, P.E., who made opening remarks and welcomed attendees. District representatives talked about their respective projects and answered numerous questions from the audience. The goal was to introduce District Six to first time attendees and promote continued collaboration between our partners. The first tour was a joint effort with the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). FHP showcased their Statewide Law Enforcement Radio System (SLERS) and communication technology used in their operations. This is also the same system SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) Operators use to communicate with incident management resources. Guests visited the SunGuide TMC to learn about FDOT’s TSM&O Program and the partnership with FHP. Representatives from FHP Dispatch and TMC Operations highlighted the importance of reliable communications on daily activities. The second tour was for the South Florida Section of the Florida Puerto Rico District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (FLPRite). The FLPRite is a professional group that hosts industry conferences, facilitates networking opportunities, and provides professional development to promote the growth of the transportation industry in Florida and Puerto Rico. The TSM&O Office was asked to present about its latest projects and initiatives including the expansion of its arterial management division, connected vehicle projects, and managed lanes operations. The third tour of the month was for new staff members of the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). The goal was to introduce them to FDOT staff and provide an overview of the program and a walk-through of the control room.

The event marked the first in-person tour given to students since the pandemic impacted regular agency operations more than two years ago. The students came in full force and eager to learn about the Department and how it manages the transportation network of our region. The day began at the FDOT District Six Adam Leigh Cann Building where they were given a formal presentation about the agency and about initiatives related to bicycle and pedestrian safety. Students then toured the SunGuide Transportation Management Center for a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the District’s real-time traffic operations program. The students rotated through three presentation stations that included a general overview of the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) Office, a demonstration of the Road Ranger Service Patrol Program and another demonstration about the Incident Response Vehicle Program.

The “Take Your Child to Work Day” event was an excellent opportunity to teach students how the Department works to keep our roadways safe and keep traffic flowing.
