The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O) Office has published a video that highlights the installation of the new video wall at the SunGuide Transportation Management Center this summer. The two-minute video shows time lapse footage of the installation process that took nearly 60 days to complete. It captures the entire process from disassembling the previous video wall monitors, building infrastructure to support the video wall, testing and calibration, and presenting the final product.

The previous video wall was installed in 2013 and had reached its end-of-life. The new video wall features the latest in state-of-the-art technology with a Direct View Light-Emitting Diode (DVLED) display for greater contrast, color range, and overall visibility. This model provides greater life expectancy, supports a seamless picture display, and uses less space in the control room. It is comprised of over 24.8 million LEDs and is only 2.5 inches deep compared to the previous wall that was 31 inches deep.

The Florida Department of Transportation District Six Office recently hosted their “Summer Tour” event for their state legislative staff in July.

Tour attendees met at the District’s headquarters where Secretary Miller and executive staff welcomed them and highlighted the latest initiatives happening in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. They were then taken to the I-395 Signature Bridge project site near downtown Miami. Project managers walked them through the bridge to show them the structures, beams, and columns that are being installed. They were briefed on the project’s milestones and estimated plans for completion. This was followed by a visit to PortMiami. They drove through the 4,200 feet tunnel that travels beneath Biscayne Bay and connects the MacArthur Causeway on Watson Island with PortMiami on Dodge Island. They were shown the cargo and cruise terminals which serve as the global gateway between the world markets and the United States. The tour finished with a visit to the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC). TMC staff gave them a program overview and detailed the services provided as well as the latest projects that are being launched in the region. They walked through the TMC’s control room where they got to see the new video wall and operator workstations up close.

The “Summer Tour” event is hosted by FDOT to showcase the agency’s major projects to state legislators and their respective staff. They take place across all seven districts and serve to promote agency relations between the agency and the representatives.

The District Six Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O) Office is happy to report that it completed installation efforts for the new video wall at the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) this summer.

The new wall features the latest in state-of-the-art technology with a Direct View Light-Emitting Diode (DVLED) display for greater contrast, color range, and overall visibility. This model provides a greater life expectancy, supports a seamless picture display and uses less space in the control room. The previous wall was installed in 2013 and was nearing its end-of-life cycle. District Six selected the new wall after conducting extensive industry research and making site visits to see various options in operation. It drafted a detailed request for proposal with built in maintenance requirements to ensure long-term sustainability. The project was awarded last summer and was completed in June 2024. The new wall is comprised of over 24.8 million LEDs and is only 2.5 inches deep. The previous wall was 31 inches deep.

The video wall plays a crucial role in regional traffic management, presenting performance measures, and facilitating interagency communication within the TMC. The new DVLED display significantly improves the overall visual quality for all users and ensures that the TMC is equipped to handle future technological advancements for years to come.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) District Six Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) Program and the City of Miami Beach (CoMB) co-hosted a tour for the city’s elected officials and other notable leaders in February.

The tour unveiled the CoMB’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) that recently opened in the District Six SunGuide TMC building. The esteemed guests included the city’s mayor, commissioners, law enforcement personnel, and executive management staff. FDOT welcomed the group and provided an overview of the TSM&O program as well as the real-time traffic services provided from the SunGuide TMC including traffic management, incident management, and traveler information. FDOT answered questions about the current projects impacting the city like the construction of the 395 Signature Bridge, 95 Express, and others. The agency also highlighted the successful partnership with CoMB and the benefits that will be yielded to the community as a result of their joint efforts. Attendees then toured the CoMB’s TMC room located on the second floor of the building. The room is outfitted with a video wall and four workstations where dedicated staff monitors traffic and parking operations. City representatives explained the intelligent transportation systems infrastructure and devices that have been installed in the city’s jurisdiction that will promote the safety and mobility of their roadways. The tour and information presented was well received by the city’s officials. They were proud of the efforts and advancements being made toward improving the quality of life for the region.

The FDOT TSM&O Office has many partnerships in place with local transportation, law enforcement, and media agencies. The goal is to share resources and information to provide the region with a multi-agency and multimodal approach to traffic management in southeast Florida.

The District Six Transportation System Management & Operations (TSM&O) Program Office has been expanding its operations and is implementing new traffic management strategies to meet the region’s growing demands. As part of these efforts, the District has been upgrading the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) with new systems and design features to accommodate current and future needs.

The SunGuide TMC is the regional transportation hub for Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. It is a 32,000 square foot facility that houses traffic and communications staff for FDOT District Six, Greater Miami Expressway Agency (GMX), Florida Highway Patrol Troop ‘E’, and other agencies. FDOT has upgraded the facility throughout the years to accommodate program growth. In 2015, the District retrofitted the center’s control room to optimize space and improve operations. It added 10 more workstations and six work desks to accommodate the growing team. The workstations were redesigned from a linear model to modular pods to streamline communication between staff and promote a collaborative work environment. This summer, the workstations were enhanced with a standing desk feature that gives operators the option to sit or stand during their shift. Standing desks reportedly provide a variety of benefits to users, including improved posture and alertness. This enhancement has yielded positive results and feedback from the staff.

District Six is planning additional building and control room upgrades to meet demand. It will be replacing the current video wall with one that uses the latest in display technology and operations. The District understands the importance of remaining adaptive to the growing transportation needs of the community and implements the changes necessary to meet these demands.

The Florida Department of Transportation District Six’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) was recognized by the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of Florida with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the annual conference in Jacksonville this week.

The award-winning project – the redesign and retrofit of the TMC – was selected from several worthy nominations in a statewide competition. Although the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) office led the effort for this very innovative and rapidly delivered project, many groups were instrumental in ensuring success including program management, procurement, financial services, design and construction.

The redesign TMC control room was undertaken to ensure the TMC’s ability to meet the growing traffic and congestion management demands of region. The TMC was transformed from a linear, eight workstation model, to a pod-based model for improved collaboration with 18 workstations and multiple support desks. The workstations were equipped with state of the art equipment and the room’s video wall also increased in size. These improvements are helping support the Center’s operational and strategies, and will also ensure capacity to safely operate future projects including Palmetto Express and Phase 2 of 95 Express.

The SunGuide Transportation Management Center (TMC) has been retrofitted to improve operations and promote the traffic mobility goals of our community.

The redesign was made to enhance the center’s ability to handle future traffic operations challenges. It transformed the control room floor by maximizing the existing workspace capacity to meet the growing demands of our region. It changed the previous workspace from a simple linear model with a total of eight traffic operator workstations into a pod-based model featuring 18 traffic operator workstations and six manager support desks. It added three to five more computer monitors to each workstation and increased the image quality and size of the center’s traffic video wall.

The new layout is promoting a more collaborative approach to traffic management. The workstations are sectioned into four pods that groups operators by major highways. The additional computer monitors are increasing operator workflow by enabling them to perform more functions and the larger video wall expanded the center’s overall highway monitoring capabilities.

These improvements are set to increase the TMC’s efficiency and enhance the benefits of the traffic services drivers depend on a daily basis. It is also equipping it the center to handle additional transportation projects as they come on line.

The redesign was completed this summer and shows a continued investment in addressing the issues of traffic congestion in our community. Integrating technology in traffic management has proven to be a viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional highway widening projects. It has shown to improve mobility, promote safety and deliver a sound return on investment to the public.

The Florida Department of Transportation District Six Intelligent Transportation Systems Program is retrofitting the Transportation Management Center’s control room to bring it up-to-date with current technological trends.

This project’s goal is to revamp the existing control room to help the FDOT and its partners with optimizing roadway operations, while providing flexibility for future growth. The project is expected to be completed this summer.

The retrofit project, which began in June, will completely overhaul the existing control room from the carpet and electrical wiring to the center’s well-known video wall. Specifically, the retrofit will focus on upgrading the control room’s technology and usability in order to improve the efficiency of operators and management staff as they manage District Six roadways. Improvements include better workstations with larger 24” and 32” monitors, new workstation desks and control room layout, and an upgrade that will make the room’s video wall with 7 more video cubes making it significantly larger and sharper. Additionally, the number of workstations increased from eight to 18, and six desks were also provided to support operations.

The Florida Department of Transportation District Six recently completed the planned upgrade of the SunGuide Transportation Management Center’s video wall.

The District replaced the wall’s previous controller, which drives the display, with a new multi-screen Activu system. As a result, the new video wall and controller now receive high definition input sources from newer traffic cameras. Also, operators now have the capability to drag and drop different sources across the expansive screen much like a traditional desktop computer. The previous system required operators to reconfigure the layout using proprietary software. In addition to the operational benefits, maintenance efforts have also been made easier since parts for the previous controller were becoming limited and expensive to find.

The video wall upgrade is part of the District’s larger effort to retro fit the control room and to enhance operator workflow as the ITS Program expands. This retro fit also includes the installation of new TMC operator work stations and is expected to begin in early 2015.
