The FDOT District Six Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) Office was selected to participate in this important event and share their latest projects and perspectives with fellow leaders.  The District Six TSM&O Program Engineer joined a morning panel with representatives from FDOT District Four and the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization to highlight public sector strategies advancing TSM&O in South Florida. Panelists discussed the integration of artificial intelligence, evolving operational strategies, and approaches to securing funding in a dynamic transportation environment. The discussion provided attendees with a multi-agency perspective on advancing mobility and system performance.

District Six also participated in the “Emerging Technologies and Strategies in TSM&O” session that highlighted innovative projects and practices in the area. The TSM&O Engineer-Freeways presented on the District’s first connected vehicle (CV) project, named the Keys Connecting Overseas to Advance Safe Travel (Keys COAST). The project was launched on State Road 5 (S.R. 5), U.S. 1, (Overseas Highway) and enables communication exchange between the traffic signal infrastructure and participating vehicles to promote the safe and efficient travel in the Florida Keys. Lastly, the District Six Consultant Project Manager outlined the coordinated efforts required to manage traffic during high-impact special events such as Spring Break, national football games, major concerts, and preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The presentation emphasized the critical role of the SunGuide Transportation Management Center (STMC) and the deployment of TSM&O resources, including active traffic management, incident management coordination, and traveler information for pre-and post-event times.

Collectively, the presentations highlighted FDOT District Six’s leadership in advancing TSM&O strategies, delivering innovative projects, and strengthening partnerships to support transportation operations in South Florida.

The workshop emphasized the need to create a “culture of curiosity” to promote the professional evolution of staff and a better future for our industry.

Events like ITS World Congress provide District Six staff with a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with peers, gain insight in best practices, and strengthen professional networks. District Six TSM&O staff gave three technical presentations at this prestigious conference. Staff presented on the “Evolution of the SunGuide TMC” at the TSM&O Spotlight on Florida session. This presentation highlighted the regional challenges, operational solutions, and milestones achieved by the District over the past 20 years. Staff also presented on the “Latest V2X Strategies for Incident Management” and on the “Warning Gate System on 95 Express” at the Vehicle to Everything Applications in Florida technical session. These presentations discussed the district’s latest projects, including the Bridge Notification System, Wrong Way Driving Notification System, and Connected Vehicles among other projects. The presentations were well received and reinforced District Six’s reputation as a leader in transportation innovation. In addition to presenting, staff also participated in a poster session, attended council meetings and peer-to-peer networking forums, further expanding their professional experience.

District Six TSM&O staff regularly attend conferences like ITE International allowing them to stay at the forefront of emerging trends, exchange best practices, and bring forward-thinking transportation solutions back to South Florida.

The District was selected to present in two technical sessions at the event. The first
presentation was titled “Evolution of the District Six Transportation Management Center
(TMC), Retrofitting for Growth”. The presentation showed how the District has enhanced
its center to accommodate for the growing demands of the region over the past 20
years. The second presentation was titled “District Six TSM&O Update” and provided
attendees with a general overview of the program’s current operations as well as a
preview of the upcoming arterial and freeway projects slated to launch in the next few
years. In addition to these presentations, the District received three prestigious awards
at the event: one for the creation of the Bridge Notification System, another in
recognition of the 20th anniversary of the SunGuide TMC, and a third recognizing Mr.
Leland DeBooy, who was inducted into the ITS Florida Honor Roll for his 25 years of
service as a Road Ranger.

District Six regularly attends transportation conferences like Transpo to stay informed
on the latest industry trends and share lessons learned. These conferences are a great
opportunity for the district to collaborate on new ideas with transportation professionals
from our industry and bring those solutions to south Florida.
